Figuring out what to wear to your engagement session is hard! Ultimately, your engagement session should feel like you. Comfortable, confident, and full of genuine connection. When it comes to choosing what to wear, many couples suddenly feel overwhelmed and afraid to feel overdressed or awkward.

Do we match? Should we dress up or keep it casual? How do we avoid looking stiff or out of place?

As a photographer, I’ve helped dozens of couples find their footing when it comes to wardrobe. Let’s break it down so you feel great in front of the camera without second-guessing your outfit every five minutes.

Start With What You’re Comfortable In

If you wouldn’t normally wear it, don’t force it. Your photos should reflect your real dynamic. Not a Pinterest version of it. Choose pieces that fit well, make you feel good, and allow movement. Confidence always photographs better than discomfort.

Coordinate. But Don’t Match!

Gone are the days of matching white shirts and jeans. Instead, aim for complementary tones or a cohesive color palette. If one of you wears a patterned outfit, have the other stick to a solid color that pulls from that palette. Think harmony, not uniformity.

Pro tip: Earthy neutrals, soft pastels, and jewel tones often photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your connection.

Dress for the Location

Consider where your session will take place. Are you hiking into the desert, walking downtown, or dancing in a field at sunset? Choose outfits that feel authentic to the vibe. Long, flowy dresses look stunning with movement, while structured pieces can suit city or editorial shoots.

Bring Two Outfits (If You Want Variety To Wear To Your Session)

Some couples opt for a “dressy” and a “casual” look. It adds dimension to your gallery and gives you both a chance to show off different sides of your personalities.

If two outfits are available in your package, just make sure both outfits are easy to change into, and bring a tote or garment bag to stay organized.

Avoid Wearing Distracting Patterns or Logos To Your Session

Busy prints and large logos can draw attention away from your faces and your chemistry. Stick with classic patterns like florals, plaids, or solids, and lean into texture. Think knits, linens, or denim for added visual interest.

Consider the Season (and Arizona’s Unique Light!)

In Arizona, light bounces differently depending on the season and landscape. Warm tones like terracotta, sage green, or mustard, look stunning against the desert. In cooler months, deep hues like navy or burgundy pair beautifully with softer winter light.

Wear Accessories! But Thoughtfully To Your Session

Simple accessories like a hat, scarf, jacket, or statement jewelry, can elevate your outfit without overwhelming it.

Bonus: Your photographer may give you something to interact with during the shoot, which helps with natural posing. If you’re not sure if your photographer does this, ask them!

Don’t Forget About Footwear

You’ll likely be walking, spinning, or standing on natural terrain. Choose shoes you can move in. (Bring a backup pair if you’re doing something dressy!)

Get Your Ring Cleaned

A freshly cleaned engagement ring catches the light perfectly during detail shots. Most jewelers will do this for free!
